Provide engineering services and technical support to the global BCS pre-cured tread (PCT) manufacturing and/or commercial dealer retread systems operations for activities associated with product development, sponsored research projects, process development, process optimization and process troubleshooting. The incumbent is a source of knowledge and expertise on the processes in the PCT manufacturing plants globally and/or the global commercial dealer retreading systems and equipment. The incumbent is also proficient in statistical analysis techniques, data collection and analysis, problem solving, and demonstrates command of all Six Sigma tools and trains other teammates with regards to PCT manufacturing and/or commercial dealer retreading systems equipment. Geographic area of responsibility includes operations in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Latin America and North America.
1. Product Development:
a. Participate in design reviews and document the results of all new tread molds.
b. Collaborate with plant employees to plan, write, coordinate and execute work orders for product development projects to achieve stated objectives.
c. Utilize expertise and demonstrate process knowledge through troubleshooting and resolving process issues that arise in the development process.
d. Perform data collection and analysis. Write technical reports summarizing results and conclusions.
e. Collect and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS) data through work order support.
f. Tire analysis - complete profile definition for Tire Facts and special tire tests including analysis after field trials. (Retread process only)
2. Sponsored Research Projects:
a. Lead production trials and Participate in technical support at manufacturing plants in the support of Sponsored Research Projects and PMP Projects.
b. Collaborate with plant employees to carry out work orders. Perform data collection and analysis. Write technical reports summarizing results and conclusions.
3. Process Development:
a. Use experience, knowledge, and creativity to implement ideas for technology development.
b. Provide on site Process Engineering support, guidance and assistance during plant process start-ups, process and technology transfers, major process changes and Retreading process changes.
c. Participate in annual quality audits of manufacturing plants as assigned (PCT process only).
d. Capital projects - responsible for development of the functional process specifications for new equipments and qualifying equipment startups.
e. Interfaces with the commercial dealer systems operation, global PCT manufacturing plants, tread and mold design group and corporate marketing during new equipment development feasibility studies.
f. Start up and certification of processes used in the release of raw materials used for manufacturing of rubber products and equipment used in the retread system.
g. Collaborate with plant employees to plan, coordinate and execute work orders for process development projects.
h. Conduct tire building and curing process studies and publish results in PSMR (Retread process only).
4. Process Optimization:
a. Initiate and provide technical support on the development of process improvements in pre-cured tread production.
b. Work with plant resources to solve process problems in tread manufacturing on new product introductions.
c. Initiate optimization projects to reduce cost, improve processability and quality.
5. Process Troubleshooting:
a. Provide technical support to PCT manufacturing and retread shops in the correction and prevention of processing related issues that result in nonconforming product and assist in development of product standards.
b. Solves PCT manufacturing and retread dealer shop processing and quality problems and provides customer support that is cost effective and reliable.
c. Performs type and cause of failure analysis for dealers/fleets and internal customers.
d. Lead continuous improvement and Kaizen activities.
e. Lead Six Sigma projects and demonstrate successful implementation.
6. Consulting and Communications:
a. Provides liaison between the global PCT manufacturing plants and/or global commercial dealer retreading systems and equipment, and corporate.
b. Visits the global PCT manufacturing plants and commercial franchised dealers to study processes, consult with personnel and make recommendations.
c. Represents the company in contacts with outside suppliers and field support.
d. Provide process training to Manufacturing design and other corporate groups as requested.
e. Responsible for technical knowledge, documentation and control of the PCT (Bandag) retreading process.
f. Serves as technical expert/resource to the Technical Support Group for the commercial dealer retread systems and provides field support for escalated calls (Retread process only).
7. Maintenance of Expertise:
a. Develop and maintain reference documents, technical work instructions, and forms in the QMS system.
b. Attends trade shows, technical seminars, and reads technical publications to keep abreast of the latest technology.
c. Provides training to other engineers, plant staff and Technical Services Group.
d. Responsible for coaching/mentoring other engineers and technicians.
1. B.S. or foreign degree equivalent in an Engineering discipline, Physics, Mathematics, and / or Masters in Business Administration. (R)
2. 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in a manufacturing plant, and / or service support of equipment and manufacturing processes. (R)
a. Rubber manufacturing experience preferred. (P)
b. Process Engineering experience preferred. (P)
c. Commercial dealer retread equipment and process experience preferred. (P)
3. A Professional Certification is preferred. (P)
4. A graduate level Engineering discipline degree is preferred. (P)
